The Tower
Construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began in the year 1170 and it began to ‘lean’ already when the construction of the second floor started in 1178.
The completion of the tower took nearly 200 years because of the unsettled soil of the plot of land and the inadequate foundation of the structure. The building is attributed to different architects and it remains unclear who the original design belonged to. The architects that did however contribute to design and construction are Bonanno Pisano, Gherardo di Gherardo, Giovanni Pisano and Giovanni di Simone.
The inclinaiton of the tower increased over time and the tower was closed to the public in 1989 while renovation and safety work took place. For nearly a decade the tower remained closed, until December 2001 when it was declared once again stable and safe while continued corrective work of its inclination took place in 2008.
The Square of Miracles
The Square of Miracles is the plaza that the Tower of Pisa is found in. The tower is only one part of the incredible structure that makes up the Cathedral of Pisa of St. Mary of the Assumption (also knwon as Duomo). The Square of Miracles has the world famous leaning Tower of Pisa, that is the cathedral’s bell tower (holding 7 different bells to create the musical scale), there is the Cathedral its self and last but not least, there’s the Baptistery, dedicated to John the Baptist, the largest baptistery in Italy famous for tis acoustics within the Romanesque building and Gothic dome.
